I like to make everything simple.
There are so many Business Coaches these days, so how do you choose the right one?
It’s such an important decision, but it’s not made easy, because most coaches obfuscate what they do by hiding behind trending business speak, such as leverage, next level / levelling up and other such meaningless phrases.
Coaching is an imperative for the success of an organization as well as of individuals. Ultimately every company’s success depends on the performance of its people. There is no substitute for human performance.
In brief there are 3 major targets for business coaching:
- Underperformance
- Increased and enhanced performance
- Future performance
Coaching is a perpetual development and learning process, completely unique to the individual and the business, so my approach is completely bespoke, based on the initial consultation phase, where the plan is designed. It is a collaborative process, based continuous feedback, geared towards improving further output. It requires commitment, accountability, responsibility and clarity of one’s goals. To this end, business coaching includes tasking and being held to account regularly.
As a Coach I believe you are the expert in your own field. The professional language and content of your field is yours, just as the professional language and content of mine is mine. This is why it’s a ‘do with’ process, not a ‘do to’ process. In other words, it’s a collaborative effort, whether I’m working with an entrepreneur, a CEO or a group of staff.
I have worked with people from a huge variety of business backgrounds over the last 30 years, and I do not have time to be the expert in all these fields. Instead I am the expert in the process of how someone is going about their business.
Added to that I also specialise in identifying aspects of your own behaviour that you do not know you are unaware of, which are currently affecting your ability to produce the results you are aiming for. By bringing this to awareness it gives you the opportunity to make positive changes and improvements to those behaviours, strategies, values and so on. This adjustment brings incremental gains that can be measured.
Emotional well-being is also a core aspect of coaching, and one often overlooked in the quest for success, but awareness of emotions and ability to deal with them makes the difference between career stagnation or even failure and success and achievement—it can make or break a career. I find it staggering that most people are prepared to spend tens of thousands of pounds on redecorating an office or kitchen, but not spend a fraction of that on personal and professional development. However anyone who is serious about self improvement spends big on emotional well-being, or mindset.
My focus is on working with a business to discover and utilise the their most productive strategies, values, and other modalities already at their disposal but which they are not utilising to the most for their benefit. There is no better improvement than to have control over one’s internal processes.
What often surprises clients is that I don’t spend much time wallowing in the problem. Instead I focus on discovering the structure of what prevents them from achieving their goals and changing the structure to make the goals achievable.
